I woke up and felt sooooo weak this morning —not a surprise, being the early days of a new cycle’s week one. As the effect of the steroids fades away, the red blood cells (or lack thereof) set the tone and the pace.
It is interesting to navigate the mind-body pull-push. When your blood cell count is down, you cannot will yourself through things. Having said that, I reminded myself it is not about all-or-nothing, and the name of the game is one block at a time.
After I dropped off my youngest daughter in school, I parked my car in the flats and decided to go for a walk. All I was hoping for was one block. Just one little block in the sun.
The day was warm and the fragrance of jazmines floated in the air. I put my AirPods on, hit play on the Mommy Playlist my girls created for me and off I went on my walk…
To my surprise, one block led to another and, before I knew it, fifteen minutes had gone by. I decided not to push my luck and made a U turn, as I still had to walk another fifteen minutes back. By the time I got to the car, I had walked for a solid half hour, my heart rate was normal and I felt energized.
It is certainly not what I was expecting, and I must say it was a very nice surprise.
Maybe because I set my mind on a discrete goal my body was able to get there, and beyond... Maybe sometimes we need to break down our battles in manageable chunks, in order to get farther than we think we can.
